Yes, the anticipation of the spike might be creating it. Don't ever try to pass a lie detector.
On the topic of HRM's: I was outside playing with mine today and doing some 1/2 mile repeats. I first did a 1 mile warmup. Heart rate slowly came up to about 160, then did some stretching and it dropped back down to around 130 before I started running again. I then did my first 1/2 mile interval with my heart rate fluctuating up and down averaging 153. It was my fastest interval of the four (I know, a whopping four)with an average pace of 6min/mi. It wasn't until I completed the interval and began my 1/4 mile rest period that my heart rate shot up to above 180 before dropping steadily down as I recovered. This was the only interval with odd heart rate readings, the rest steadily climbed to above 180 with peaks at 195 until my rest period. I think it has to do with the way my body handles the greater effort while still energized and before oxygen debt. I think the readings from the other day were also accurate, but I'll continue to keep an eye on it.
Has anyone else experienced a "delayed peak" of heart rate that occurs after the first interval of greater effort? I'd like to think I'm not the only freak.
