Barefoot Running - NOT?
Jan 26th, 2010, 6:41am

Just received the usual email blurb from Road Runners Sports, but this one included a note from their "Chief Runner" about the dangers of barefoot running:

Dear Runner, I care about your health and well-being.  That's why when I hear headlines talking about the supposed benefits of "barefoot running"...I can't stay quiet!

Don't blindly follow the latest trend.  This barefoot running thing is a major injury waiting to happen.  Roads and trails are littered with pea size rocks just waiting to take a big bite out of your feet and leave you sidelined for weeks.

Look, there are some great shoes to help you run "Minimalist".  Just try the Nike Free or LunarGlide.

Now, while I am glad the Chief Runner is concerned about my well-being and the concept of running barefoot escapes me, I can't help but feel there is a conflict of interest here when a company selling running shoes warns me about the hazards of running without shoes.  Just a thought.   Smiley

Maybe they should start selling bandaids and Neosporin as well. Then they could be a little more objective.

Is Nike giving him a bonus for that article? The Lunarglide is anything but a minimalist shoe. Why didn't he suggest a Mizuno Universe or NB 100 for an example?

I think we are made to run barefoot on trails and grass.  But I don't think we were made to run on asphalt barefoot.  I know that I say this as I have friends that have become very good at running on pavement barefoot (and I am very impressed), I just feel that it has its time and its place, and I just don't think that the road is such a place.

I find doing strides on the the infield of a track barefoot helps with foot-strike and muscles of the foot, but I just do not feel comfortable doing anything beyond that.
