Shakes / Tremors after Running
Feb 27th, 2010, 10:01pm

I also posted this post in the trail running forum.  I ran a moderate 4.5 miles this morning.  I have not been thirsty today, and have probably drank on the low side.  I got shakes tonight quite badly for me.  I checked my temp and it was 97.4 (which is about normal for me).  I checked it 30 minutes later and it was 99.1 (although wrapping up in a blanket may have promoted the increase in temp.  I immediately drank a pound of water.  I then weighed myself and was about average.  I was even 2.6 pounds above what I weighed after running this morning (lunch, dinner and a pound of water).  If I would have been under this morning's weight, I would have thought dehydration.  Everything else seems to be normal.  Urination is pretty normal and is normal color (not yellow or any dark color).  Since drinking the pound of water, the shakes have decreased, but not gone away.

In the past I have gotten minor shakes after running.  I always thought it was my body creating a fever because I had put my body through trauma.  It usually happened when I was sweating more in much higher temps.

Has anybody else had this?  Is this dehydration?  Anything else I should look out for?

What kind of blood pressure do you normally have?  Do you have a way of measuring it? Sometimes, if my bp gets low, I feel very shakey. Drinking a lot of water can have a quick effect on bp (my dad had autonomic nervous system failure and if his bp dropped too much, my mom would give him a lot to drink, and it would raise it quickly).

Would about your blood sugar? Any reason to think that might be in play?

Have you consulted your doctor?  If you experience this again, it would be a good idea to talk to him/her.

Thanks Queen.

I don't have bp issues or blood sugar issues.  I haven't checked tonight.  I drank a bottle of water after I had my worse shakes.  The shakes seemed to slowly disappear after the water.  I seem to be better now, but still have a minor headache and maybe a little fever.

I'd check the blood sugar too....that's my first guess.   I don't ever recall hearing people getting the shakes from dehydration

"Low blood sugar causes shakiness because the nerves and muscles are deprived of fuel. The adrenaline system responds by kicking in, and this can make the shakiness worse for a while. The circumstances will make it obvious if this is what is happening in your case. A low blood sugar is most likely to occur if you eat a lot of sugary snack foods; these raise the blood sugar sharply, but then it plummets down again. The answer is to eat more slowly digested carbohydrates, such as porridge for breakfast instead of a sweet cereal and fruit instead of sweet puddings. Low blood sugar can also occur after excessive exercise."

did you eat breakfast before your run?  what else did you eat all day (other than your shakeSmiley )?   too many simple sugars and not enough carbs?

Here's a list of my eats for the day:

Banana before running
(1) S cap
A couple / few Propels / bottles of water
A small bowl of nut and crunch type cereal
a Taco Bell bean burrito for lunch ( I'm sure the conscencous is that this caused it, but rest-assured, I've eaten these before with no ill effects.)( I mistakenly got onions on it this time, though.
A few cheese puffs.
A few slices of cucumbers.
Early dinner - Steak and Shake - double cheeseburger, some fries, salad, and some of the new Kool-aid grape shake (not my choice).
Although I can usually handle the SNS meal without a problem, I did have to attempt to relieve myself a couple times at the home show with mild success.

Sorry for the TMI, but you asked.  Before SNS I had not felt unordinarily hungry or stuffed.  It seemed like a normal Saturday.

Please let me know if you see anything lacking - other than a healthy diet Wink

i'm no nutritionist but i never run w/o eating a source of carbs first.  Try that but if it happens again i'd go see a doc.
