barkley marathons 2010

andrew thompson is a maniac.  every bit as amazing as a jurek or other top ultra names.  a.t. record holder and threatening to become first ever consecutive barkley finisher.  basham has been thompson's crew for years but is obviously accomplished in his own right.

enjoy.

jonathan basham becomes the ninth finisher of the barkley marathons in 24 years, finishing the race in 59 hours 18 minutes.  those nine are the hardest of the most hardcore.

I see Joe Decker ran it again.  I don't recall seeing his name mentioned here before but he is a Illinois native (Cuba) who won the tile of "World's Fittest Man" several years ago.  He has a book, "The World's Fittest You".  The book isn't running specific, more general nutrition and fitness but I found it enjoyable.  Same old story.  Overweight guy who drinks too much starts running.  Starts winning power-lifting competitions, runs Badwater, sets record for most weights lifted, miles ran, push ups, sit ups etc. in 24 hours.  I hope he finishes Barkley one of these years but those hills have to be tough carrying arms the size of most Barkley runner's waists.

joe is a cool story, but i'd put his chances of finishing the 100 somewhere between no way in heck to ain't happenin'.

the barkley finishers list is an interesting study.  the 10 finishers have some commonalities. primarily, they are all accomplished long distance hikers/fastpackers, although not necessarily great runners:

david horton:  pct one-time record holder, at challenger
cave dog: colorado 14ers, long trail, catskill peaks, etc. record holder
jim nelson/mike tilden: finishers of the now-defunct nolan's 14, no small task
brian robinson:  triple crown hiker in calendar year.  incredible.
andrew thompson:  at record holder
jon basham: long trail record holder
brett maune:  jmt record holder

they can cover incredible distances quickly in all sorts of conditions, but not always RUNNING.

and they are largely highly educated:

david horton: ph.d, college prof
blake wood: nuclear physicist
brian robinson: software engineer
cave dog: ivy league grad (doesn't assume intelligence, but still)
brett mauve:  laser physicist

all of these guys are extremely intelligence and have the ability to strategize in complex circumstances.  none of them have yet to write a book about their barkley.  that also demonstrates something.

only the most exceptional of the exceptional even sniff a finish.

I kinda wanna try just to see how awful it really is!  even if the odds of finishing are on par with winning the lotto Smiley
