Just read your original post. I had something very similar happen back in February. Stumbled on a root and wrenched my knee. It was fine walking and running for the first few miles then the outer knee pain would come on suddenly and would be excruciating on the downhills (as in crying, alone, up against a tree in the middle of Farmdale in pain and frustration). It would radiate up the outside of my thigh and feel so weak I wasn't sure my leg would support any weight. Uphills were fine, though. Turns out I pinched the plica tissue inside my knee. No structural damage from continuing to run, the doc said, but it would hurt like heck until it healed. He even gave me the go ahead to keep training for the 50-miler. It took until probably mid-April before I felt good-as-new, but no problems now. Good luck!
