ankle / shin
Jun 10th, 2010, 5:58am

Last Saturday during the race I noticed that where my left ankle and shin met was starting to get sore. I hadn't twisted my ankle or kicked anything and it wasn't all that painful, just annoying so I just chalked it up to general wear and tear.  By the time I got home on Sunday afternoon my ankle and foot had swollen up to comical proportions.   The swelling was completely gone by Tuesday but there is still a lingering soreness.  The sore area is at the front and very center of my lower leg and extends to my ankle.  The whole sore area is 2-3 inches.  Of course I'm hoping this is just a tendon or soft tissue issue and nothing more serious.  Anyone ever have anything similar?  I'm pretty sure it isn't shin splints as I've had those several times and the location is different, plus the swelling.

Other than that my legs and feet feel great and I'd love to get back to some light running but I'm going to wait to see what happens with the shin.  I was riding my bike this morning and did jog about 100yds just to see how it felt.  The soreness was still there, but no more than from walking.  I wouldn't be concerned at all if it hadn't been for the swelling.  Any ideas?

Paul,  I have experienced the ankle swelling after McNaughton and also after the "fun run" with you last Saturday/Sunday.  I noticed on Monday night that my left ankle was swollen (but not painful).  I think in my case (and maybe in yours as well) it's just general wear and tear from being on your feet for that time.  I didn't ice it or do anything, and by Tuesday morning, it looked and felt fine.

Is the shin pain in your front lower leg close to where your shin meets your ankle?  I've battled that during/after McNaughton as well.  Again, my theory is it's more of an overuse type of injury.  In my case, sometimes I wouldn't feel it until over an hour or more into a run, and then it would come on and get progressively worse as time went on.  I took it easy for a few weeks, cut way back on training, included more days with no running at all, and now it seems that it has gone away.

I know how hard it is to cut back on training, especially now that the weather is nice and it's easier to get out and do more.  And in your case, you probably feel like Superman after Kettle.  But, give yourself some real easy, easy weeks with a lot of total rest days.  Your fitness won't go away that quickly.  Listen to what your body is telling you.

I've had pain in that area, but never swelling.  I'll be interested to see how it all turns out (hopefully well!)

Um, Paul?
YOU RAN 100 MILES, FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!! (and kicked butt, from what I hear)

A little odd that it was just in one ankle, though. Could the soreness be linked to having swelled up that much? After my "baby 50-miler" my legs swelled a bit and were very sore to the touch for days after, not just a muscular soreness. I think it was from all the s-caps, Heed, gels and all the other sodium/electrolyte replacements I took.

Paul, had the same thing after my first 100 miler.  Just give it some rest for a bit.  It does go away, never had that happen again although I still do swell up after a 100 in the angles and lower legs, but all goes away after one good long night sweat which usually occurs the next night after finishing.  I wake up just drenched in sweat and I think it must just be water retention from the 100.

I've had my feet swell to huge sizes during 100's and 24 hour races; that has caused blisters.  But never my ankle.

Thanks all.  That is what I was hoping to hear.  Initially my wife was concerned that it may be a stress fracture.  I've never had one but I figure it would be a lot more painful.  It was the swelling that had me concerned but sounds like that is fairly common.

i don't know, you ran for 27 hours, i'd think some swelling could easily come with that territory.

congrats, by the way--remarkable accomplishment.

Thanks but I can't take all the blame though.  Some of that needs to be directed towards other people on this forum.  For years I ran by myself or with my four legged friends and never had the urge to run a stupid distance.  Those of you at fault know who you are.

The good news is that the shin seems to be getting better.  Hopefully I'll be running on it again sometime next week.  Till then I'll knock the cobwebs off my bike.
