So how'd it go?

I wasn't able to get out to McNaughton this weekend - how did everyone do?  Did you hit your goals?  Any funny stories?  Limericks...?

Awesome, great job Jack!  What was your finishing time, then?  Hopefully you didn't kill my time by too much...  Wink

Dex-

I enjoyed my first 50 this weekend.  Suprisingly, considering early trail conditions, I only wiped out once.  Hit a slick tilted bridge and down I went.

It was interesting to see the trail conditions change as the day went on.  In the beginning we were trudging up the hills (just trying to get traction) and then mud skiing the down hills.  By the 3rd loop, the sun started coming out, and the mud was getting packed down.  Even the one sandy part of the trail was packed down by then.

I struggled through my 4th loop. On the 5th loop I was drafting two ladies (Tina and Yvette) from Iowa City, and my pace and spirits picked up.  At a couple of points in the last loop, Tina was doing flips and Cartwheels.

My kids met me at the last 100 yards and we crossed the finish line in 12:57ish.

Huge thanks to all the race volunteers!  You guys at the ad stations keep us running and smiling. Smiley

Awesome, great job on your first 50, Kirby!  Love it when the kids are there to meet you.  Smiley  Jack, looks like you killed my time for sure, not sure what BJ's was.  I wondered if it was gonna be too hot, glad you both made it!

I paced Christy for almost a 1/2 mile.  She had developed IT Band issues and had to drop. So I joined Jared Stein for his 3rd loop along with some guys from QC.  I named the one "Get Er Done Guy".  I swear he looked just like him, blue plaid shirt with the sleeves torn off.  We all had a good time.  Jared was having problems with his achilles so hope the rest of his run went well.  Then I joined Carey on his 5th after which he climbed in his van for a nap.  By then I was feeling surprisingly good, so asked Rich if he would count me as an official finisher if I continued on and did 50.  He said yes, so I did. I ran my 3rd loop with David Corfman from Cincinnati.  This guy is amazing.  He did Badwater last year and got a silver buckle at Western States a couple years ago by finishing in 23:51!  He's also done 2 of the 150's at McNaughton and said he's on that video with David Goggins.  I tried to sleep for 3-4 hours (didn't go too well) and met David for his last loop at 5 a.m.  He was great company, but I was a little dissappointed that he wouldn't do just one more loop to help me finish.   Roll Eyes  Anyway I cranked out a 2:44 5th loop with some socializing at the aid stations.  No idea what my accumulated time is, but it was a great weekend.  Thanks everyone!

One other story, while I was working at the Totem Pole Saturday morning, one guy asked for duct tape.  He had some severe chafing issues (you know where!).  I offered my compression shorts but he chose the tape.  He proceeded to strap on several long strips on both inner thighs while we all cringed.  A friend of mine who's never been to an ultra was there witnessing this too.  The look on his face was priceless! Don't know whether he'll be back.   Wink  Anyway, I hate to think what that felt like later upon removal.   Shocked

Great job everyone!

Everyone did so awesome!

you guys are all studs and studettes! Smiley

BJ was out of the race due to an injury and I saw Donna turn in her chip in the middle of the hottest part of the day.   2 guys I knew from high school were there...one finished his 50 miler and the other dropped his 100 after 60 miles...not sure why yet.

I saw the "Tina" that Kirby mentioned in his post.....she was dancing and jumping across the finish line.....she must not have run hard enough Smiley

Paul cranked out his 100 and made it look easy.

Spencer was looking great when I ran with him at night...though he kept insisting he didn't feel great.... lips sealed

by and large , everyone did just fiiiiiiiiiiine  Smiley

Oh, one other story.  I ran briefly with this girl who had only run a 5k before this.  She'd seen something about the race and thought "that sounds like fun".  When she mentioned it to some co-workers they bet her that she couldn't finish.  Well, she did and is going to rake in $800!  THAT is a studette.

Definitely sorry to hear that Christy - it sucks when an injury pops up to ruin your day.  Sad  Hope you're feeling better soon!

Sorry DD I am sort of a "virgin" at this webcasting thing.  Good news though, instead of running the 100 at Kettle Moraine this year I will be shadowing and working with Bill Thom (of RunRace) with the timekeeping.  I will do a better job at it next year.  The results should be posted on the RunRace site sometime after lunch today.

On my end it was a fun weekend helping out and doing the time keeping.  Woke up at 3:30 Saturday to get things ready and did not get to bed again until 8pm Sunday so sort of an ultra in a way (I was able to catch about an hour of zzzz's Saturday night but that was it).  I really appreciated the help of Adam Zimmerman aka Darnyankee (darn, did I give that away), Ollie aka ollie for all the help at the start/finish their help was priceless!!  Also thanks to Jim McIntyre for the use of his clock for 24 hours of the event (until we ran his battery dead) and also to Chris Dierker aka Chris Dierker for running me out an extra time clock to fill in after the first one went dead.

And then....thanks to someone with a last name Schmitt, I wound up with a nice new empty storage container with the name "Schmitt" on top, it first was full of cookies but now is empty.....

That's Schmitt, a.k.a. Queen of the darn
ed Squirrels.

Duct Tape Guy....ouch!!  When we saw him at 3ish a.m. Sunday morning. He was excessively painful to look at. I will never again think the chafing under my biceps is really painful again. It pales....

thanks Dex. I think I stopped in time to prevent yet another long-term injury. Hey, on a positive note, Ann & I had a blast walking in the dark! thank goodness the guy came along that blocked the spider webs! Unlike many of you seasoned ultra runners this was the first time I completed a 30 miler (Clinton Lake) and then 2 weeks later another 30 miles and the first time I ran more than 20 miles at McNaughton. I appreciate even more the unbelievable running talent in our community. All of you that do back to back ultras weekend after weekend. I'm not giving up. Will do Farmdale and will be back next year!! Congrats to everyone that accomplished their goals and congrats to everyone that tried what I think is a really difficult course. Thanks again to all volunteer support. I guess I needed Kerfoot hill repeats........... Melody next year don't go to St. Louis.....
