An orienteering race is a race where instead of having a nicely marked course you get a map with check points on it, you also get a punch card. you run to each check point in order and punch your card and then back to the finish.
You get a clue sheet which has little pictorials to help you figure out where the check point is (example: check point 2 is on the north side of a big rock.....or Check point 4 is on the south end of a fence line...etc)
It's pretty fun..... there's an extra dimension to the race since the course is not defined. two runners/teams could pick different routes to the same check point.
